Chickens

๐ In short
Cock-a-doodle-doo! That's the rooster waking up the farm in the morning. Chickens are among the most numerous birds in the world, raised everywhere for their meat and eggs. They have a red comb on their heads and two red wattles hanging under their beaks.
๐คฉ Did you know?
- There are more than 10 billion chickens in the world, more than there are people!
- One hen can lay about 245 eggs a year.
- Chickens can only fly short distances, like hopping onto a branch or over a fence.
- Eggs and chicken are rich in protein, which helps your body grow.

๐ Rooster, hen and chick
The male is called a rooster; it's bigger, with a taller comb and bright, shiny feathers. The female is called a hen, and she lays the eggs. The baby is called a chick, covered in soft yellow fluff.
๐ From egg to chick
A hen sits on her eggs to keep them warm for about 21 days. At the end, the chick pecks through the shell from inside with a little bump on its beak, and a few hours later it's walking and pecking at grain.
๐ก What do chickens eat?
Chickens scratch the ground with their claws looking for grain, worms and insects. They have no teeth, so they swallow little pebbles that stay in their stomach and help grind up their food.
๐ฏ Combs of different shapes
Not all chicken combs are alike: some are like a saw, some are tiny like a pea, and some look like a rose. The comb helps the chicken get rid of heat on hot days.
