Forests

📖 In short

A forest is a large area of land covered in trees. But it isn't just trees: there are bushes, grasses, mosses, wild flowers and mushrooms, and lots of animals live there: birds, insects, squirrels, deer and bears.

🤩 Did you know?

  • Forests cover about 30% of the land today.
  • In tropical forests the canopy can be 30 meters high or more.
  • The Amazon is the biggest rainforest in the world.
  • The Levant and North Africa have forests of cedar, pine and oak.

🌟 Forest floors

A forest is like a building with floors: at the top is the canopy of tall treetops, below are smaller trees and bushes, and on the ground are grasses, mosses and fallen leaves. Each floor has its own residents.

🔍 Kinds of forest

Hot, rainy countries have thick tropical forests that are always green, mild countries have forests whose leaves fall in autumn, and cold countries have huge conifer forests.

💡 The Earth's lungs

Forests make lots of oxygen, clean the air, hold water in the soil, stop the land washing away, cool the climate, and are home to most kinds of wild animals and plants.

🎯 Forests in danger

People cut down forests to take wood, farm the land or build. So we must protect forests and plant new trees in place of those that are cut down.
