๐ Pocket watches
Small portable clocks appeared in Europe about 500 years ago, and pocket watches were the most common for more than 200 years. A man would take one out of his pocket and open its cover to check the time.
๐ Inside a mechanical watch
A mechanical watch has a small coiled spring that stores energy and tiny toothed wheels that move steadily. It has more than a hundred tiny parts and some small jewels that reduce friction.
๐ก Quartz watches
Most watches today run on a tiny battery and a quartz crystal that vibrates amazingly evenly, so they're very accurate and cheap.
๐ฏ Special watches
There are waterproof divers' watches, watches that glow in the dark, watches with alarms, and watches for blind people, who feel the hands.
