๐Ÿ‘‹ Greetings and introductions in French

Bonjour ! ยท Merci ยท Au revoirBonjour !MerciAu revoir

๐Ÿ“– In short

The first thing we learn in any language is how to greet people and introduce ourselves. In French we say Bonjour in the morning and daytime, Bonsoir in the evening, and Au revoir when leaving.

๐Ÿ”Ž The lesson

1 Hello and goodbye

  • Bonjour !Good morning / Hello
  • Bonsoir !Good evening
  • Salut !Hi (between friends)
  • Au revoir !Goodbye
  • Bonne nuit !Good night

2 How are you?

With friends we say ร‡a va ?, and with grown-ups and the teacher we say Comment allez-vous ? to be respectful.

  • Comment รงa va ?How are you?
  • ร‡a va bien, merci.Fine, thanks.
  • Et toi ?And you?

3 Introducing myself

Notice that in French we say โ€œI have eight yearsโ€, j'ai huit ans, instead of โ€œI am eightโ€.

  • Je m'appelle Lina.My name is Lina.
  • J'ai huit ans.I'm eight years old.
  • J'habite ร  Rabat.I live in Rabat.
  • J'aime le football.I like football.

4 Polite words

  • S'il te plaรฎtPlease
  • Merci beaucoupThank you very much
  • De rienYou're welcome
  • PardonSorry / Excuse me

๐Ÿ’ก Watch out!

  • We use tu with friends and family, and vous with grown-ups we don't know and with the teacher.
  • In French we leave a space before exclamation and question marks: Bonjour !

๐Ÿงฉ Test yourself

1 What do you say to your teacher in the morning?

2 What does J'ai huit ans mean?

3 How do you say โ€œthank you very muchโ€?
