A fraction describes part of something split into equal parts: the denominator at the bottom is how many parts there are in all, and the numerator at the top is how many we take. The child sees the fraction as a pizza or a colored strip.
In the โColor the fractionโ exercise the child taps parts to color them and sees that 2/4 and 1/2 are the same amount. The wrong answers offered are the common mistakes, like swapping the numerator and denominator.
