Earth

๐Ÿ“– In short

Earth is the planet we live on, the third from the Sun. Water covers most of its surface, so it looks blue from space; it has air to breathe and a temperature that suits life. It's the only planet we know has life on it.

๐Ÿคฉ Did you know?

  • The Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
  • The oldest known fossils are about 3.5 billion years old.
  • The temperature of the Earth's outer core is about 4500 to 6300 degrees.
  • As it goes around the Sun, the Earth travels about 30 kilometers every second!

๐ŸŒŸ Layers like a peach

The Earth has layers: the thin rocky crust we live on, the very hot mantle under it, and in the middle the core of iron and nickel, as hot as the surface of the Sun.

๐Ÿ” The Earth turns

The Earth spins once a day, which makes night and day. It goes around the Sun once a year, and because its axis is tilted, we have four seasons.

๐Ÿ’ก Continents and oceans

The Earth has seven continents and five oceans. The continents move very, very slowly, a few centimeters a year, about as fast as your fingernails grow!

๐ŸŽฏ The Moon, Earth's companion

The Earth has one moon going around it, which causes the tides in the seas and lights up our nights.
