๐Ÿ“– In short

Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system, a gas giant and the fifth planet from the Sun. It's eleven times wider than the Earth, and if it were hollow it could hold about a thousand Earths!

๐Ÿคฉ Did you know?

  • Jupiter's mass is 318 times the Earth's.
  • The temperature at the top of Jupiter's clouds is about 140 degrees below zero.
  • Jupiter's axis is tilted only 3 degrees.

๐ŸŒŸ A planet with no ground

Jupiter has no solid surface to stand on; it's made mostly of hydrogen and helium, covered in colorful clouds that form brown, white and orange stripes.

๐Ÿ” The Great Red Spot

On Jupiter a huge red storm has been spinning for at least hundreds of years, and it's bigger than the Earth! Scientists call it the Great Red Spot.

๐Ÿ’ก Lots of moons

Jupiter has dozens of moons; the four biggest were discovered by Galileo: Io, with active volcanoes, Europa, covered in ice with an ocean beneath, Ganymede, the biggest moon in the solar system, and Callisto.

๐ŸŽฏ It spins fast

Although Jupiter is huge, it spins very fast, so its day is less than 10 hours long! But its year is long, about 12 Earth years.
