Lizards

๐Ÿ“– In short

Lizards are reptiles related to snakes, but most have four legs and a long tail. Lizards come in very different shapes, colors and sizes: there's the little gecko on the walls of the house, the spiny-tailed lizard in the desert, and the huge Komodo dragon.

๐Ÿคฉ Did you know?

  • The Komodo dragon is the biggest lizard in the world, up to 3 meters long.
  • There are thousands of kinds of lizards.
  • Some lizards have no legs and look like snakes.
  • A gecko licks its eyes with its tongue to clean them, because it has no eyelids.

๐ŸŒŸ A tail that drops off!

If an enemy grabs some lizards by the tail, the tail breaks off and keeps wriggling on the ground to distract the enemy while the lizard escapes. Later a new tail grows.

๐Ÿ” It loves the sun

Lizards are cold-blooded, so in the morning they lie in the sun to warm up and get going, and they hide in the shade or under stones when it gets too hot.

๐Ÿ’ก Amazing skills

A gecko can walk on walls and ceilings because its toes are covered in tiny hairs that stick to surfaces. And some lizards run on their back legs across the top of the water!

๐ŸŽฏ Tricks for defense

The frilled lizard spreads a big flap of skin around its neck to look scary, some spiny lizards puff up their bodies, and some change color to hide.
