The eye

๐Ÿ“– In short

The eye is the organ of sight, and with it we see the world around us: colors, shapes, faces, books and the sky. We use our eyes for almost everything, so we must look after them and protect them well.

๐Ÿคฉ Did you know?

  • The distance between the centers of the two eyes is about 6.5 centimeters.
  • In an eye test people read letters on a chart usually 6 meters away.
  • The eye blinks thousands of times a day.
  • Eye color comes from the colored part around the pupil, called the iris.

๐ŸŒŸ How do we see?

Light enters the eye through a small black hole called the pupil, then passes through the lens, which focuses it onto the retina at the back of the eye. The retina sends the picture to the brain along the optic nerve.

๐Ÿ” The pupil changes

In bright light the pupil shrinks to keep out too much light, and in the dark it widens to let more in. Look at your eyes in a mirror after switching the light off and on!

๐Ÿ’ก The eye's guards

Eyelids close the eye to protect it, eyelashes keep out dust, eyebrows stop sweat running into it, and tears clean it and keep it moist.

๐ŸŽฏ Look after your eyes

Never look straight at the sun, don't sit too close to the screen, rest your eyes by looking into the distance now and then, read in good light, and eat carrots and vegetables.
