The seahorse

๐Ÿ“– In short

The seahorse is an amazing little fish with a head like a tiny horse's and a tail that curls like a monkey's! It lives in warm, shallow seas among seaweed and coral, and most are less than 15 centimeters long.

๐Ÿคฉ Did you know?

  • About 25 kinds of seahorses live in warm seas.
  • A seahorse can change color to hide.
  • A seahorse's body is covered in bony plates instead of scales.
  • More than 100 babies can come out of the father's pouch at once.

๐ŸŒŸ A fish that swims upright

A seahorse swims upright, fluttering a little fin on its back very fast. It's a very slow swimmer, so it holds on to seaweed with its tail so the current doesn't sweep it away.

๐Ÿ” Dad carries the babies!

With seahorses something rare happens: the female lays her eggs in a pouch on the male's belly, and the father carries them until they hatch, then hundreds of baby seahorses come out.

๐Ÿ’ก Independent eyes

A seahorse can move each eye on its own, like a chameleon, looking two ways at once for food.

๐ŸŽฏ It eats by sucking

A seahorse has no teeth and no big stomach, so it sucks up tiny animals with its long snout like a straw, and eats a lot all day.
