The mosque, the house of God

๐Ÿ“– In short

The mosque is the house of God, where we pray together, learn the Qur'an and meet our brothers and sisters. It has a tall minaret from which the call to prayer is made, a mihrab that shows the qiblah, and a minbar from which the imam gives the Friday sermon.

  • The Sacred Mosque in Makkah is the largest mosque in the world.
  • Al-Aqsa Mosque was the first qiblah: Muslims prayed towards it for about 16 or 17 months before the qiblah changed to the Kaaba.
  • In Arabic, the word โ€œmasjidโ€ (mosque) means โ€œplace of prostrationโ€.
  • The Prophet ๏ทบ said: โ€œThe earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purificationโ€, so a Muslim can pray in any clean place.

๐ŸŒŸ Parts of the mosque

The minaret is a tall tower from which the call to prayer is made; the mihrab is a niche in the wall that the imam stands in front of, showing the qiblah; the minbar is a set of steps the preacher climbs; the courtyard is a wide open space; and the place for wudu is near the door.

๐Ÿ” The greatest mosques

The three greatest mosques are the Sacred Mosque in Makkah, which contains the Kaaba, the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, and al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Praying in them is better than praying anywhere else.

๐Ÿ’ก The first mosque

When the Prophet ๏ทบ migrated to Madinah, he built the Quba Mosque on the way, then the Prophet's Mosque, carrying stones and mud alongside his companions.

๐ŸŽฏ Mosque manners

We go to the mosque clean, enter with our right foot, and pray two rak'ahs to greet the mosque. We speak quietly, don't run between people praying, and keep it clean.
