About โThe missing numberโ
This activity is a first step towards equations: instead of working out the answer, we look for a hidden number that makes the sum right. Children learn that subtraction undoes addition and division undoes multiplication.
It starts with adding up to 20 for Year 1, then adding and subtracting up to 100, then multiplying and dividing, and finally all operations mixed. After each answer the whole sum appears.
