Fog

Fog

๐Ÿ“– In short

Fog is tiny drops of water floating in the air near the ground. It's really a cloud that has come down to earth! When fog is thick, we can see only a short way ahead.

๐Ÿคฉ Did you know?

  • There are several kinds of fog depending on how they form, including radiation fog on cold nights.
  • In the Namib Desert, some insects drink fog drops that collect on their backs!
  • In some dry places people collect water from fog with special nets.
  • The difference between cloud and fog is that fog touches the ground.

๐ŸŒŸ How does it form?

Fog forms when damp air near the ground cools and its water vapor turns into tiny droplets. It usually happens on clear, cold nights and early in the morning.

๐Ÿ” Sea fog and valley fog

Fog often forms over seas, lakes and rivers, and in low valleys where cold air collects at night.

๐Ÿ’ก The sun clears it

When the sun rises and warms the air, the fog droplets evaporate bit by bit, so the fog disappears and the sky clears.

๐ŸŽฏ Careful in fog

Thick fog is dangerous for drivers, pilots and ships, because it blocks the view. Drivers turn on special lights and go slowly, and ships sound loud horns to warn others.
