⚖️ Comparing: plus, moins, aussi
📖 In short
The giraffe is taller than the elephant, and the tortoise is slower than the rabbit! To compare two things in French we put the adjective between plus and que, moins and que, or aussi and que.
🔎 The lesson
1 Three ways to compare
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| plus ... que | More ... than |
| moins ... que | Less ... than |
| aussi ... que | As ... as |
- La girafe est plus grande que l'éléphant. The giraffe is taller than the elephant.
- La tortue est moins rapide que le lapin. The tortoise is less fast than the rabbit.
- Sami est aussi grand que Lina.Sami is as tall as Lina.
2 The adjective agrees
In a comparison the adjective agrees with the first noun: Ma sœur est plus petite que moi.
3 Better: bon and meilleur
We don't say plus bon but meilleur: Ce gâteau est meilleur que l'autre. And for the very best: le meilleur, la meilleure.
- Le guépard est l'animal le plus rapide. The cheetah is the fastest animal.
- C'est la meilleure glace !It's the best ice cream!
