👉 Demonstratives: ce, cette, ces
📖 In short
To point at something and say “this book” or “this rose”, French uses ce, cet, cette and ces. They take the place of the article before the noun.
🔎 The lesson
1 The table
| Masculine | Masculine before a vowel | Feminine | plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| ce | cet | cette | ces |
2 Examples
arbre is masculine and starts with a vowel, so we say cet arbre.
- ce garçonThis boy
- cet arbreThis tree
- cette fleurThis rose
- ces enfantsThese children
3 This one or that one?
To tell near from far, we add -ci for near and -là for far.
- ce livre-ciThis book (near)
- ce livre-làThat book (far)
💡 Watch out!
- cet and cette sound the same, but cet is masculine and cette feminine.
