🕰️ The imparfait

je jouais · nous étionsje jouaisnous étions

📖 In short

We use the imparfait to describe the past and tell what we used to do: Quand j'étais petit, je jouais dans le jardin (When I was little, I used to play in the garden). It's like “used to” or “was …ing” in English.

🔎 The lesson

1 How do we make it?

Take the nous form in the present, drop -ons, then add the endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez and -aient. From nous jouons we take the stem jou.

PronounVerb
jejouais
tujouais
il / ellejouait
nousjouions
vousjouiez
ils / ellesjouaient

2 The same way for every verb

  • nous finissons → je finissaisI was finishing
  • nous faisons → je faisaisI was doing
  • nous avons → j'avaisI had
  • nous allons → j'allaisI was going

3 être: the only exception

PronounVerb
j'étais
tuétais
il / elleétait
nousétions
vousétiez
ils / ellesétaient

4 imparfait or passé composé?

Descriptions and habits go in the imparfait, and an event that happened once goes in the passé composé.

  • Il pleuvait quand je suis sorti. It was raining when I went out.
  • Le chat dormait, puis il a sauté.The cat was sleeping, then it jumped.

💡 Watch out!

  • The endings -ais, -ait and -aient all sound the same!
  • Fairy tales start in the imparfait: Il était une fois... (Once upon a time…).
