Being good to neighbors

๐Ÿ“– In short

A neighbor is someone who lives near us, and they have a great right over us. We greet them, help them when they need it, visit them when they're ill, and don't bother them with loud noise or rubbish. That's how neighbors live in love and safety.

Whoever believes in God and the Last Day, let them honor their neighbor.

  • The Prophet ๏ทบ said: โ€œGabriel kept urging me to be good to neighbors until I thought he would make them heirsโ€ (reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
  • In Surat an-Nisa', the Qur'an mentions โ€œthe near neighbor and the distant neighborโ€.
  • Some scholars said that our neighbors are the people of 40 houses on every side.
  • In many Muslim countries, neighbors swap dishes of food in Ramadan before iftar.

We don't shout at night, leave rubbish outside their door, or play ball near their windows. Our neighbor's comfort is part of our own.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said to Abu Dharr: โ€œWhen you cook a stew, add more water and remember your neighbors.โ€ So we give our neighbors some of our food, especially in Ramadan and on Eid.

๐Ÿ’ก Helping when needed

If our neighbor is elderly we help carry their things, if they're ill we visit and ask after them, and when they're happy we share their joy and congratulate them.

๐ŸŽฏ All neighbors

A neighbor has rights even if they aren't of our religion or country. And we're good to our classmates too, since they're our neighbors at school.
